Madeleine “Maddy” Oswald, Ph.D.

I am a cognitive developmental psychologist studying math and language learning.

I currently work as an Early Childhood Learning Specialist and Research Analyst for the Getting on Track for School Success Project at the University of Chicago.

I recently completed my Ph.D. at the University of Chicago working with Dr. Susan Levine and Dr. Susan Goldin-Meadow where I was also a Committee on Education Fellow

I research children’s understanding of words that describe quantity (two, some, more, etc.) and space (square, diagonal, above, etc.). I also explore how parents and teachers support children’s learning of math concepts.

Check out my current projects or work I’ve presented!

Education:

Ph.D., Psychology (2022)

University of Chicago

M.A., Psychology (2018)

University of Chicago

B.A., Psychology & Theatre (2014)

Wesleyan University

How did I get here?

I started my undergraduate degree at Wesleyan University thinking I would pursue a career in theatre. Turns out my “back up major” in psychology was much more interesting, in large part due to working with Dr. Anna Shusterman, first at Kindergarten Kickstart and then in the Cognitive Development Blue Lab.

I went on to manage Dr. Jill Lany’s Infant Studies Lab at the University of Notre Dame before coming to UChicago for grad school.
